Kannukkul Nilavu was the first film of Ilayathalapathi in the new millenium. From the new era onwards he began to commit entertaining and commercial ventures. The film was directed by Fazil and produced by Mohan Natarajan under the banner of Sinthamani Cine Arts. This was the second venture of Vijay with director Fazil. The film Features Vijay and Shalini in the lead roles. The songs were composed by music maestro Ilayaraja. The 170 minutes film was released on 14 January, 2000.
The film was boxoffice hit and earned good reviews.

STORYLINE
The film is about the story of a guy named Goutham Prabhakar, suffering from split personality. He meets Dr. Rajasekhar, a psychologist to retain his memories about a girl named Gayathri whom he met for a short period of time and wishes to find again. But due to his mental disabilities, Goutham even forgot how she disappeared. The doctor finds that Goutham is searching for Shanmugan who he believes have killed Gayathri. Meanwhile the doctor's daughter, Hema falls in love with Goutham. He slowly recovers to normal life due to the love and affection shown by his mother. After few attempts of revenge, Goutham starts a normal life with his lover Hema.
